We are Tilt`ing in Trondheim

We have talked to Anna Schmidt, who leads the group Contemporary Dance for Adults, who opened the performance of Silence in Trondheim. Here is what Anna has to say about both Silence, place-specific dance, dance in general and contemporary dance for adults.

“Site-specific performances can surprise you! What I especially like about Silence/Det vi ikke ser is that every performance is so unique because of the different location, but also the different audience to whom the dancers move quite close. This atmosphere of the unknown and the possibilities to interact with the audience and react to the situation is really exciting about this project.”

What about the concept of visiting a home with dance and music? What do you think about this?; “You hear many people saying ‘I just dance at home’ so actually dancing at home is something not so strange or uncommon to many people. But having a dance performance at home plus 30 ‘strangers’ as an audience in your house is definitely really special. I can imagine having four dancers and one musician in my living room, but it’s a bit harder to imagine having the house full of spectators. For me, not coming from Norway, it’s actually really interesting to see how people live and what kind of people open their houses for this event.

What do you think is the limits of dance? Is there a limit to how dance can infiltrate society? “I don’t think that there are limits for dance. Dance can be so many things and can have so many forms. Even to define dance can be so hard although everyone knows what dance is. I think dance is really personal also, because of its connection with the body. So I think the limits are really personally defined. I myself don’t see any limits for dance. Dance is universal and for everyone. It’s so accessible because the only thing you need for it, you have already: your body.”

Would you like to dance more and see more dance in Trondheim? How can we get Norwegians that is struggling to feel comfortable dancing to engage more and enjoy more? “With the huge variety of dance styles, I think that there is something suitable for everyone. It depends on what you feel comfortable with. Some people feel better in a group or with a partner they know and when they get told what to do or copy steps, while others prefer to dance alone and express themselves freely. I think it is a question of trying out different things and find the right dance form or style for you. Then one can enjoy, and that’s what it’s all about: the joy.

There can never be enough dance! So yes, I would like to have even more dance in any form whatsoever in Trondheim. With Samtidsdans for voksne we contribute to the dance scene in Trondheim with regular contemporary dance classes for adults. Besides modern dance techniques and floor work exercises there is also room for dance improvisation individually and in contact with other people. To have some dance experience can be helpful, but it is not required. We are such a diverse group. People have different dance backgrounds but everyone is really open, curious and enthusiastic. So I warmly invite everyone who is interested to just try it out and move with us.”
