Seminar - Let's Talk Dance - Museums in Motion

In collaboration with Dansens Hus, Museums in Motion is a day-long workshop giving participants a glimpse into the limitless possibilities there are for dance and dancers to interact with museums, their collections and their visitors. Led by Masako Matsushita (IT) and Betsy Gregory (UK), the morning session will offer examples of what has already been achieved and encourage participants to begin imagining new approaches. In the afternoon, Masako will engage the group in MOVING, a practice she describes as “a dance-visit, a guided choreographic experience to rediscover, through movement, the art collections of museums, fairs and galleries. Dance becomes the tool to offer new ways of experiencing art, helping visitors to become involved, both intellectually and viscerally with the artworks.”.

SEMINAR SPEAKERS

Italian multidisciplinary artist with Japanese heritage, Masako Matsushita deals with movement analysis through choreography and dance, performative installations and community interaction. She explores the presence of the body in space aiming to generate architectures for socialisation through senses, scores, maps, while enquiring the connection between culture and aesthetics, identity and tradition, virtual devices and sensorial practices. In collaboration with the Norwegian artist Ingvild Isaksen they form the duo called A mas.ing, experimenting with how digital behaviours and virtual realities can be transformed into tactile social experiences. Masako is one of the founder of 4bid Gallery in Amsterdam.

Betsy Gregory has worked in dance for over 40 years, as a performer, teacher, programmer, producer, mentor and artistic director. Trained in London in the 70s, she was one of the first generation of independent dance artists in Britain. In 1988, she received a bursary to study arts administration and went on to work at The Place Theatre, under John Ashford, later joining Dance Umbrella. She succeeded Val Bourne as Artistic Director of Dance Umbrella in January 2007, a post she held until November 2013.

Currently, she is a member of the board of Aerowaves Europe and is a freelance mentor and facilitator. Occasionally, she dances professionally again. In 2005 she was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the French government for services to dance and, in 2019, received an Honorary Doctorate from Middlesex University, London. She was awarded an OBE in the UK’s New Year’s Honours List 2024.

SEMINAR SERIES

We are repeating the success of the popular and topical theme of “Dance in Public Spaces” and this year we are shedding light on the subject of dance in museums. In 2024, TILT Grow will take place for the seventh time and aims to promote dance professional achievements and make dance artists more viable in an ever-changing field. In this connection, a number of open seminars are organised for all types of (dance) artists, where important topics are highlighted and current issues are put on the agenda.
